Franz Sinabell ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Österreichischen Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung WIFO, wo er im Forschungsbereich Umwelt, Landwirtschaft und Energie tätig ist. Er arbeitet zu den Themenfeldern Agrar- und Ernährungspolitik, Umwelt- und Ressourcenökonomie sowie Risikomanagement.

Von 2008 bis 2012 war er stellvertretender Direktor des WIFO. Er hält Vorlesungen auf an der der Universität Wien und der Universität für Bodenkultur Wien. Er ist Experte zur Beratung der Kommission zur Erarbeitung des jährlichen Berichts zur wirtschaftlichen Lage der Landwirtschaft und Vorstandsmitglied der Österreichischen Gesellschaft für Agrarökonomie.

Im Laufe seiner Karriere war er an zahlreichen nationalen und internationalen wissenschaftlichen Projekten beteiligt. In vielen Fällen war er Projektkoordinator. Zu Themen der ländlichen Entwicklung führte er Studien für die OECD, die EU-Kommission und nationale Stellen durch. Er war wissenschaftlicher Koordinator mehrerer Studien über die Auswirkungen von Programmen zur ländlichen Entwicklung in Österreich. Zuletzt koordinierte er Projekte zur volkswirtschaftlichen Bedeutung der Biomassenutzung der Landwirtschart in Österreich und zur Zukunft der Forst- und Holzwirtschaft in Österreich. Er war auch Mitglied im Redaktionsteam zur Schutzwaldstrategie, die 2019 veröffentlicht wurde.


Franz Sinabell is senior researcher at the Austrian Institute for Economic Research (WIFO), where he works in the research area environment, agriculture and energy. He works in the fields of agricultural and food policy, environmental and resource economics and risk management.

From 2008 to 2012 he was Deputy Director of WIFO. He lectures at the University of Vienna and the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences Vienna. He is an expert advising the Commission on the preparation of the annual report on the economic situation of agriculture and he is a board member of the Austrian Society of Agricultural Economics.

In the course of his career he was involved in numerous national and international scientific projects. In many cases he was project coordinator. He has conducted studies on rural development issues for the OECD, the EU Commission and national agencies. He was scientific coordinator of several studies on the impact of rural development programmes in Austria. Most recently, he coordinated projects on the economic significance of biomass use in agriculture in Austria and on the future of the forestry and timber industry in Austria. He was also a member of the editorial team for the protection forest strategy published in 2019.
